I covered a nice farm retirement auction for Richard Bissantz in southwest Ohio on April 13, 2013.

Lots of big equipment on this auction, like a 2007 John Deere 9220 4WD tractor with only 683 hours ($167,000), a 2007 John Deere 8130 tractor with 375 hours ($143,000), and a 2008 John Deere 9670 STS combine with 411 engine hours ($183,000).

But Richard’s favorite piece of equipment on his farm, the one he hated to see go the most? His 2004 John Deere Gator T520. It was a diesel, 4WD, with cab & front hitch. Oh yeah, it only had 47 hours on it.

Wow.

Richard was a joy to visit with. I got out to his farm the day before the auction and we had time to visit about his farm and his equipment. Richard was having the retirement auction due to some issues with his leg. Single his whole life, and very independent, Richard actually had a hitch put on the back of his JD 9670 STS combine to haul his 520 T Gator out the field with him…so when he was done he could just ride his trusty Gator back to the farm house.

Richard’s “One Way” Gator.

As I said, it had only 47 hours on it. Auctioneers Brad & Glenn Hess with Hess Auction Co. told the sale crowd how much much Richard loved his John Deere Gator. They even playfully referred to it as Richard’s wife.

So how did it sell? Extremely well. It went for $11,700 and was purchased by Richards neighbors who knew how very well he cared for it. Here’s a YouTube video of this 2004 John Deere Gator T520 with 47 hours selling on Richard Bissantz’s April 13, 2013 farm retirement auction in southwest Ohio (Hamersville, OH):

Above is a 1988 John Deere 4450 with 2,612 hours which sold for a new record auction sale price of $70,750 on a 3/9/13 farm estate auction in Alpha, MN

I’ve been covering machinery auctions for 23 1/2 years. I’ve seen a lot of tractors sell.

None quite like the 1988 JD 4450 I watched sell on a March 9, 2013 farm estate auction in Alpha, MN. This was a beautiful tractor with only 2,612 “1 owner” hours in fantastic condition. The 4450 never pulled any tillage. As good used tractor values are up 7-15% so far here in 2013 I was very interested to see how high this super nice JD 4450 would sell.

I’ve compiled (523) auction sale prices on JD 4450′s going back 17+ years. The record high sale price I’d had seen was $50,750…for a 1985 model 2WD 4450 with, amazingly, only 735 actual “1 owner” hours on it, on a November 2, 2012 farm auction in west-central Missouri. I thought the 1988 John Deere 4450 with 2,612 hours may approach or creep just over $60K on the March 9th farm auction in Alpha, MN. Turns out I was too conservative in my guess.

It sold for $70,750…a new record auction sale price….by a whopping $20,000!

Oh, and this 1988 JD 4450 sols WITHOUT the duals ($1,800) or the weights ($1,400). The same buyer from Tennessee bought the tractor, dauls and weights, so all told he paid $73,950. Plus he has to ship it from Minnesota to Tennessee.

I shot Youtube video of this 1988 John Deere 4450 as it sold on the March 9th auction. I’m glad I did, if for no other reason than to prove to folks who say, “No way, I don’t believe a 25-year old 4450 could sell for over $70K at auction.” Yep, it did. Here’s the video:

Used planter values are up early in 2013.

Proof came on a nice farm auction in central Michigan on Feb. 21, 2013, where the John Deere 1760 12R-30 planter pictured above (Conservation, liquid fertilizer, 1 owner, front fold, 3 bu. seed hoppers, Seedstar) sold for $52,000, just $3,000 off the all-time record auction sale price on a JD 1760 12R-30 of $55,000 (11/21/11 farm auction in northeast Kansas, 1 owner, excellent condition, <1,000 acres use).

Here are (3) other strong auction sale prices I’ve seen so far in 2013 on John Deere 1760 12R-30 used planters:

* $41,000: 2/6/13 farm sale, north-central Illinois
* $41,000: 1/11/13 farm sale, northwest Indiana
* $42,000: 1/19/13 farm sale, northeast Iowa

The February 21, 2013 farm auction in central Michigan also produced a very strong sale price ($30,000) on the 1981 JD 4440 tractor with 6,350 hours, as well as the 1967 JD 3020 diesel tractor with 6,910 hours ($10,100).

I’m asked the question often.

“Hey, Machinery Pete, how do online auction sale prices compare to traditional on site auctions?” Well, I’ve been closely observing this question the past few years as online machinery auctions have continued to grow and we continue to compile auction sale price data on all types of used farm and construction equipment sold on all types of auctions all over the U.S. and Canada. Pretty hard to generalize, as obviously many important factors go into sale price comparisons, but one thing is clear to me.

Good condition used John Deere tractors sell very well in either auction format.

Proof came the past two weeks on a pair of John Deere 4960 tractors (200 HP, made by Deere 1992-1994). On a January 24, 2013 traditional farm retirement auction in west-central Ohio, a sharp 1993 John Deere 4960 with 3,045 hours (pictured above) sold for a new record auction sale price of $114,000 on a sale by Schrader Real Estate & Auction, a whopping $27,000 over the prior record high U.S. auction sale price on a John Deere 4960 of $87,000 (11/26/11 farm auction in same west-central Ohio region, 1993 model with 3,425 hours).

Then along came this tractor:

A 1994 JD 4960 with 2,140 “1 owner” hours sold on an online consignment auction February 6, 2013 by my auctioneer friend Mike Espe of Elburn, IL. Hmm, just two weeks after the record auction sale price was set on a traditional on site farm retirement auction and now here comes this beauty on an online consignment auction. Wonder how it will go?

It sold for $110,000.

Watching the online bidding bump in the final hour from $91,500 to $100,000, then, $104,000, $108,000 and finally topping out at $110,000 was fascinating. And totally fun. Some doubted whether a nearly 20-year old used tractor, even one this nice, could sell for more than $100K on an online auction. Now we know. It can and did. $110,000 for that 1994 JD 4960.

No matter what type of auction, quality sells. Quality sells very well.

On August 11, 2012, in Red Wing, MN a farm retirement auction with a line of spiffy used farm equipment was held. But what was everyone in the days leading up to the auction talking about?

The pair of low hour John Deere 2520 diesel tractors.

One was a 1969 model with 3,503 original hours on it. The other was a 1970 model with 5,815 hours. I can’t begin to count the number of folks who picked my brain for what these 2520′s might sell for. “What do you think Pete, how much?”

Most folks at the auction I talked to were thinking $15,000 would be the top bid. Turns out most folks were wrong. Too low. The 1969 model sold first for $20,000, followed by the 1970, with higher hours remember, for $20,500.

Wow.

Here’s a YouTube video I shot of both tractors as they sold on last Saturday’s Red Wing, MN farm auction:

Very strong price (see pic below):

Sweet used tractor. Strong price.

But after visiting with auctioneer Steve Feldman with Ball Auction & Realty, Inc., I was likewise impressed with what the 2004 John Deere 4710 sprayer with 2,126 hours (90′ boom, Norac boom leveling system)
that sold for $112,000.

“The owner paid $100,000 for it a few years ago,” said Feldman.

So older, with additional hours on it, but it sells for more money now. Boy have I heard that tale more than a few times here the past 6, 12, 18 months.

Oh, one more for you from this farm estate auction January 11, 2013 in northwest Indiana…a 1952 John Deere G tractor. Very nice shape. Want to guess how high it sold?

$12,500.

I’m talking about a 1971 John Deere 4000 tractor with 5,562 hours sold on a farm retirement auction December 18, 2012 in the northeast Iowa town of Independece. Deere made the 4000 model tractor from 1969 – 1972, but what made this particular 4000 rare was its configuration…a diesel, power shift.

The auction was by my friends at Sullivan and Son Auction of Carthage, IL. Here’s a Youtube of the tractor selling on the auction. Buckle your seatbelt…

Over the past year, Machinery Pete has reported on some of the most outstanding selling prices for used farm tractors, as well as the agricultural community’s opinion about these massive machines. Machinery Pete reports the results of tractor auctions across the country where used John Deere farm tractors are sold to anxious bidders. He is connected with 750+ auctioneers across the U.S. and Canada and has 40 contacts who gather auction results that are then listed on the Machinery Pete site.

The following is a month-by-month overview of some of the best-selling and record-breaking used farm tractors that Machinery Pete has reported on for the Machine Finder blog in 2012:

January: A 2001 John Deere 7510 tractor, with 830 hours of use, was sold for the record price of $82,000 at a Missouri auction.

February: A 1983 John Deere 4050 2WD tractor with 3,975 hours sold for a new record auction sale price of $44,000 at an Iowa auction.

March: A 1999 John Deere 8200 tractor with 3,918 hours sold for a new record high price of $88,000 at a Missouri auction.

April: A 1972 John Deere 4020 open station tractor with 3,660 hours sold for $28,000 at an Ohio auction.

May: A retiring farmer, who had a heart transplant in 1997, put his 1999 John Deere 7210 tractor up for sale; the tractor only had 127 hours of use.

June: A 2007 John Deere 7520 tractor with 451 hours sold for $90,000 at a farm retirement auction in southwest Ohio; the owner, Barney Yeager, paid $86,000 for this brand new tractor 5 years ago.

July: 82-year-old Albert Groeneweg sold his 1966 John Deere 2510 diesel, power shift tractor for $14,500 at an Iowa auction, which constituted the 3rd highest auction sale price Machinery Pete has seen in the last 16+ years on a JD 2510.

August: A 2007 John Deere 8330 tractor with 850 hours sold for a new record high auction sale price of $167,000 at a Minnesota auction.

September: Two John Deere tractors set auction price records in southwest Iowa; a 1997 John Deere 8200 with 1,319 hours sold for $82,500 and a 2002 John Deere 8320 MFWD with 1,052 hours sold for $149,000.

October: A 1963 John Deere 4010 tractor with 8,000 hours sold for $9,250, a 27.3 percent jump in value from its original price of $2,525 50 years ago.

November: Two low-hour John Deere 2520 diesel tractors sold for $20,000+ at a Minnesota auction; bidders assumed the tractors wouldn’t go for more than $15,000.

The results of any December auctions are still to be determined, but we’re hopeful this trend of high-valued used farm tractors continues next month and into 2013. The record-breaking selling prices for used John Deere tractors just goes to show how reliable the equipment is and how confidence farmers feel about it. Tractor maintenance also has a hand in how well a machine is re-sold; if you’re meticulous with your farm tractors, they can maintain or grow their value in years to come.

The owner reportedly made everyone and anyone remove their boots & shoes before entering the tractor cab

It was understood. Before entering the cab, you had to take off your boots & shoes.

An extreme example of meticulous care of your used farm equipment, some/most may say obsessive, but it worked. Just look at how the 2000 John Deere 8410 tractor shines. What a beauty. You could eat your Thanksgiving turkey dinner off the hood its so clean.

I thought about this tractor today. It sold for a new record high auction sale price of $136,000 back on a September 11, 2010 sale in northwest Illinois. What made me think of this beautiful JD 8410 tractor was another shiny JD 8410 sold on a farm auction in northwest Ohio last Saturday (November 17, 2012), see pic below:

This 2000 JD 8410 tractor with 2,836 hours sold for $130,000 on a northwest Ohio farm auction November 17, 2012. $130,000

This was also a 2000 model John Deere 8410, but had over 2,300 more hours, 2,836 hours to be exact. Even with the far greater number of hours, this tractor sold for $130,000 on last Saturday’s farm auction near Cloverdale, OH…making it the 2nd highest auction sale price I’ve ever seen on a JD 8410 tractor. More proof of how very RED HOT the current used tractor market is as 2012 winds down.

Another point of comparison: almost exactly one year ago, on a November 17, 2011 farm auction in northeast Iowa that we shot for our “Machinery Show” on RFD-TV, a 2000 John Deere 8410 tractor in “Like New” condition with 2,793 hours sold for $117,000.

So $117,000 for a 2000 model Deere 8410 with 2,793 hours last November and now $130,000 for a 2000 model Deere 8410 with 2,836 hours this November. As I’ve been saying for a while now…”the used tractor market is ON FIRE.”

I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again: It PAYS to take great care of your used equipment!

Vivid proof came on a farm estate auction October 25, 2012 near Janesville, WI. George Auction Service held this sale that featured (2) very nice condition, well cared for John Deere tractors, a 4440 tractor with 5,333 hours and a late-model JD 4020 with 8,233 hours (diesel, power shift, side console, 1 onwer).

The John Deere 4440 tractor sold for $42,000, a good bit more money that it would have sold for brand new 30 years ago. I’ve documnted TONS of John Deere 4440′s sold over the years (1,137 auction sale prices over past 16 years). $42,000 is the 4th highest auction sale price I’ve seen on a John Deere 4440.

Here is a pic of the late model John Deere 4020 with 8,233 hours sold for $24,000 on this same October 25, 2012 farm estate auction near Janesville, WI:
