The agriculture industry has benefited from the advances made by the John Deere company since its inception roughly 175 years ago, as the products released by the firm have helped ease operations for farmers and have allowed these individuals to improve the efficiency of their farms.

John Deere has announced some of its new products for 2013, and many of these offerings will allow farmers to see immediate benefits and increased production due to the nature of the problems that the equipment fixes.

The new KernelStar Technology that is being released by the company will further advance its biomass and livestock feed processing systems, as this equipment can be placed on self-propelled forage harvesters for improved efficiency.

John Deere prides itself on the use of only the most advanced equipment in its products, and it was for this reason that the company acquired the intellectual property rights to the KernelStar from the German firm CAWI.

The technology has already established strong customer acceptance for enhancing forage quality for livestock and biogas producers, and John Deere saw this acquisition as a way to bolster their holdings and improve the function of their machines.

“The new John Deere KernelStar technology will add significant value to John Deere Self-Propelled Forage Harvesters and should further improve machine productivity in the field. The integration of this new kernel processor is the result of intensive customer research and reflects the growing demand for the best possible forage and substrate quality,” said Chris Wigger, vice president of sales and marketing.

Wigger added that the company has created a more robust spout-turning system that has a faster rotating speed for better reliability and ease in getting all of the material into the trucks and wagons.

The KernelStar product is based on the state-of-the-art concept of allowing for more intensive treatment of the kernels when compared to either the conventional cylindrical roll or disc designs on the market.

“Apart from the improved processing of kernels, a significant reduction of over-length particles can be achieved, as well as a reduction of the component’s power consumption,” said Richard Halsall, the marketing manager for the SPFH Division at John Deere.

The new design is reliant on new contoured, intermeshing discs that provide increased surface area to enhance the processing of crops.

Many small farms can’t support themselves without obtaining income from another job off the farm.  To try and counter-act this, many farms around the country are turning to non-traditional ways of using their land to raise money.  It’s known as agritourism, and farmers are finding many unique and creative ways to use their land for more than just crops.

Agritourism is when farmers open up their farms to the public, and guests can pay to enjoy a variety of provided activities.  The available activities vary from farm to farm, but farmers get creative and people are starting to see these as destinations altogether.  A day at the farm might include picking fresh peaches off the tree, petting animals, navigating through a corn maze, riding horses, learning to make your own jams, or even hunting.  The income from guests can often be a big help to farmers.  In some cases the income is enough to cover the entire cost of animal feed, one of the largest expenses for some farms.

Some farmers go beyond just providing daily activities for guests and provide multi-day experiences, turning their farms into bed-and-breakfast type lodges.  Guests spend a few days on the farm, doing typical farm work and learning what it would be like to live on a farm full time.  The guests are often from a nearby city, curious about where their food comes from and what a somewhat opposite life would be like.  A farm’s owners will either run the entire operation or hire people to do it for them.  In addition to teaching how a farm works, they cook the guest’s meals and provide amenities you would expect from a standard bed-and-breakfast.

Agritourism has been on the rise over the past several years.  In 2007, approximately 23,000 farms took part in agritourism, with each one bringing in around $24,300.  Compared to 2002, when agritourism brought in $7,200 per farm, this is a huge increase.  The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) projects that farm work will only account for 13% of the average farm income this year.

With agritourism growing so fast, one wonders if it will continue to grow and continue having a customer base.  If every farm offered activities for guests, something would have to differentiate them to keep people interested.  Many offer the same activities, just with slight variations.  To continue providing family fun for years to come, farms need to continue innovating and finding creative new ways to use their land.  What kind of fun would you like to have on a farm?

• When the season begins, cut your grass using the highest setting, and reduce it as the summer progresses. This will result in the number of weeds decreasing, as well as cause more water retention.
• Fertilize warm season grasses in the spring and cool season grasses in the fall.
• Mow regularly. This could range from once a week to twice a week depending on the growth rate and desired height. Additionally, grass cuttings can be beneficial in dry months, but moss can form if you don’t mow regularly.
• Water your lawn to the point that the roots are moistened. This will help in times of drought and to prevent disease.

Dont’s

• Don’t water at night. The absence of sun will result in disease.
• Don’t cut your lawn when it’s wet. This could damage your lawn and/or lawn mower.
• Don’t forget to have your blades sharpened or replaced at regular intervals.
• If you have an uneven lawn and are using a petrol rotary motor, make sure you do not scalp your lawn in certain areas.
• If you go a few weeks without mowing your lawn, don’t cut it down to your desired height all at once. This could disrupt photosynthesis and leave your lawn with a yellow discoloration.
