Easy. That would be the 200 horsepower John Deere 4960, made by Deere from 1992-1994. Prior to September 2012, the highest auction sale price I had ever seen on a JD 4960 tractor was $76,500. Since September? I’ve seen a whopping (6) 4960′s sell for $80,000 or more at auction.

The hottest used tractor around?

Wow.

The latest example came on a nice February 11, 2012 farm auction in south-central Illinois, a sale by auctioneer Jamie Scherrer. A 1992 model 4960 in very nice condition, with 3,600 hours, sold for $86,000 on this farm auction, a mere $1,000 of the all-time record auction price of $87,000 for a 1993 4960 with 3,425 hours sold on a November 26, 2011 farm auction in west-central Ohio.

This February 11, 2012 farm auction in south-central Illinois also produced another eye catching sale price: the 1998 JD 9610 combine with 2,100 engine hours sold for $83,000 (no heads). That is the highest auction sale price I’ve seen in 5 years in the U.S. on a JD 9610 combine.

Talent, Imagination & Passion.

A winning recipe for any endeavor in life. Last week in Mississippi I met two retired buddies who are high on the talent, imagination and passion scale and have produced some amazing things with their heads, hearts and hands, unique testaments to their devotion to all things John Deere.

Check out the YouTube video above and you’ll be introduced to Raymond Miller of Stantonville, TN. Raymond used to work on oil rigs in South America back in the day. Lately he’s been busy crafting (3) exact replicas of his favorite tractor, his own 1939 John Deere B. Miller’s (3) minature replica JD B’s had tons of folks stopping to look at the farm show last Friday and Saturday.

Miller also is building his own helicopter. Yep, a helicopter, a lightweight aluminum design powered by a Johnson 110 HP outboard motor. Wow.

Positioned right next to Miller in the entryway to the Crossroads Arena show floor was his buddy, Larry Nelms of Corinth, MS. Nelms had (4) of his souped up pulling garden tractors on display, one complete with (2) engines. Nelms and Miller take their pulling garden tractors around to contests all over the southeast U.S. One of Nelms John Deere pulling garden tractors has only tasted defeat once.

I love traveling the country covering farm machinery auctions. Fun to see what everything sells for. But the real fun? It’s meeting folks like Raymond Miller and Larry Nelms, two buddies who aren’t spending their retirement years sitting on the couch watching TV. They are funnelling their love of John Deere equipment into some truly unique and memorable creations that will bring smiles to folks’ faces for years to come.

The Deere combine collection of Bob Cooper of South Wayne, WI. From L-R, Deere 42 pull type, Deere 3300 and Deere 9660 STS.

Couple interesting items regarding old Deere combines came across my desk this week.

First came a package in the mail from Bob Cooper, President of the Wiota John Deere Collectors Club in southern Wisconsin. Bob is from South Wayne, WI. I met Bob at a farm retirement auction November 12th that we were shooting for the “Machinery Show” on RFD-TV (Thursday 8PM CST, Sunday 9PM CST). Bob mentioned his collection of antique Deere combines. I asked him to send me some pics. He sent some beauties, see the (3) pics above showing his old Deere 42 pull type combine in the field at the same time with his Deere 3300 and newer Deere 9660 STS combines.

Bob also has an extensive collection of Deere pull type combines including a Model 25.

Now you might wonder how much the old to antique Deere combines are worth. More than you might imagine. I check our “auction results” database at www.Machinerypete.com and found some interesting data on Deere 42 pull type combines. Back on a March 13, 2003 auction in northwest Pennsylvania, a Deere 42 combine in “good” condition sold for $350. Zoom ahead to a May 26, 2010 auction in east-central South Dakota where a Deere 42, also in “good” condition, sold for $1,900.

Wow.

The same day I got Bob’s old Deere combine pics in the mail I happened to be talking with Richard Vaughan with Rich and Rich Auctioneers in Rich Square, North Carolina. Richard mentioned he just got a phone call from a man representing a group of farmers from Liberia (west coast of Africa) regarding the 1984 JD 4420 combine on the January 28th farm auction Rich and Rich Auctioneers is having in Stoney Creek, VA.

Southern Virginia is a LONG way from Liberia.

Richard relayed that the caller from Liberia said his group of local farmers have pooled their money and are looking for good Deere 55, 3300, 4400 and 4420 combines. Light and easy to ship.

So who knows, maybe we’ll see a run up in values on these old Deere combines with folks here at home beginning to think about collecting them and small farmers around the world coming here to acquire them.

A 2001 John Deere 7510 mechanical front-wheel drive tractor (115 HP) with 830 hours sold for a new record high auction price of $82,000 on a nice farm auction December 28, 2011 in Memphis, MO (northeast Missouri).

The previous high auction sale price I’ve seen on a John Deere 7510 tractor came exactly five years prior, on a December 28, 2006 farm auction in southwest Iowa, where a 2000 model 7510 in excellent condition with 1,550 hours sold for $75,000.

This 2002 JD 1760 8-row no-till planter with liquid fertilizer sold for a record high auction price of $59,000 on a December 3, 2011 farm auction in north-central Indiana. This was the second time in three weeks a new record high sale price was set on John Deere 1760′s.

Auction sale prices on good condition used John Deere planters shot significantly higher late in 2011.

I saw proof from farm auctions in Kansas, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Indiana and Ohio, each producing record or near record high auction sale prices on a variety of used Deere planters. The kicker was a 2002 model John Deere 1760 8-row planter sold for $59,000 on a farm auction December 3, 2011 in north-central Indiana. Here’s a Youtube video I put together highlighting these record-setting planters, footage of the JD 1760 selling for $59,000 on the Indiana auction is toward the end of the video:

Used John Deere 4040 Sells Big

This “1 owner” tractor sold on a September 2, 2011 farm auction in north-central Missouri

Modern farming is a big diverse world.

Easy to focus on the ever increasing size & complexity of all types of equipment needed to farm these days, but the daily stream of auction sale price data that comes across my desk and into our www.machinerypete.com web site speaks to the wonderfully diverse nature of farming today.

Two recent examples are a used 31-year old John Deere 90 horsepower tractor and a small used 6-row John Deere planter pushing 20 years old, both sold on recent farm auctions. An ageing 90 HP tractor and a two decade old 6-row planter, big deal, right?

Actually, yes, big deals.

The tractor was a 1978 John Deere 4040 tractor with only 1,368 “1 owner” hours sold on a September 2, 2011 farm auction in north-central Missouri (see pic above). Sale price was $33,000, making it the 2nd highest auction sale price I’ve ever seen on a JD 4040 tractor. So apparrently still lot of buyer interest in older, smaller tractor like this in very good condition.

Ditto for the 6-row John Deere 7200 planter sold for a new record high auction price of $20,250 on a farm retirement auction August 13, 2011 in southeast Minnesota. Again, who cares about an older, smaller 6-row planter? Lots of folks.

A big wide world of modern farming indeed.

This 1995 John Deere 7800 2WD tractor with 3,454 hours sold for a record high auction price of $62,250 on a November 23, 2010 sale in north-central Iowa.

I’ve always liked the “back in time” hook. 10 years ago today, this happened. 50 years ago today, that happened. Love it. Valuable perspective to be gained I think from occasionally looking in the rear-view mirror.

I had a little fun recently on our Machinery Pete Facebook page. On July 24th I went back in our auction price database and found a farm sale from July 24, 2001. So the 10 Years Ago Today hook. What I found was most interesting:

July 24, 2001 farm auction, west-central Minnesota
1994 John Deere 7800 2WD tractor with 1,800 hours, 1 owner, sold $44,000

Now compare that $44,000 auction sale price from 10 years ago to these JD 7800 2WD tractors sold more recently at auction:

6/28/11, north-central Indiana: 1995 model, 4,232 hours, $56,000

11/23/10, north-central Iowa: 1995 model, 3,454 hours, $62,250

12/10/10, northwest Iowa: 1993 model, 4,497 hours, $50,000

8/9/10, east-central Illinois: 1996 model, 1,871 hours, $56,000

So 10 years older, with three of four examples far greater number of hours, yet worth significantly MORE money. Quite interesting indeed.

HOT DAY: HOT SALE PRICES IN ILLINOIS

I’ve been calling my auctioneer friend from central Illinois, Mike Maske of Maske Auction Service, for a lot of years now. A lot of years. Mike’s a great guy, always fun to visit with. Last Thursday (July 21st) Mike had a small but very nice farm auction in Lincoln, IL. 98 degrees, sticky, hot, humid, wow! But a nice lineup of equipment produced some very strong sale prices. I just posted a picture & little note on our Machinery Pete Facebook page about the 2006 Ford F350 Super Duty 4×4 pickup with 40,400 miles (Power Stroke diesel) that sold for $32,000.

Mike told me they were thinking before the sale maybe it would get up to $24K…..went a smooth little 50% over $24K, but par for the course for what I’ve been seeing on nice used PICKUPS here so far in 2011. Here are a few more sale prices from Mike’s July 21st farm sale in Lincoln, IL:

2004 JD 9760 STS combine with 1554 engine hours: $96,000

2006 Drago 8R-30 corn head: $29,000

JD 925F flex platform: $12,750

1998 JD 8200 2WD tractor with 2632 hours: $71,000

JD 1780 16/31 planter: $22,500

1997 Wilson DWH-400 41′ grain trailer: $16,500

J&M 875 grain cart: $17,000

WW 16′ livestock trailer, good floor: $1,000

JD 14T baler, twine: $500

Dearborne 8′ disk: $450

JD 2700 5-shank disc chisel: $16,500

Any of those sale prices CATCH YOUR EYE?

Probably that 1998 JD 8200 2WD tractor with 2632 hours sold for $71,000, right? I know I sat up to attention when Mike relayed that sale price. I checked our “auction results” and found (164) sale prices we’ve compiled on JD 8200′s over the last 15 years. $71,000 is the 2nd HIGHEST sale price I’ve ever run across for a 2WD 8200. The only higher auction price came back on a 1/21/09 farm sale in southeast Nebraska, where a 1996 8200 2WD with 1940 hours (in showroom condition) sold for $74,000.

Keep checking back here on my blog for the latest in news & notes from the auction front of the used farm & construction equipment markets…..and check out our “Machinery Pete” Facebook page too, I post fun little informative updates & pictures there every day….go there now to check out the rare NH 178 self-propelled hay baler up for sale on a July 30th farm sale in Whitelaw, WI, a sale by my friends at Miller ‘N Co. Auctions & Appraisals….she’s a real beauty, does 23 MPH! What will it sell for?? Stay tuned

Illinois Auction is a Big Hit

This tractor sold on a July 21, 2011 farm auction in Lincoln, IL for $71,000. That is the 2nd highest auction sale price Machinery Pete has seen in past 15 years on a 2WD 8200

The price of Gold has been skyrocketing. Gold is seen as an alternative investment with an upside.

What else is “as good as gold” as an investment? Well, based on the auction sale price data on all types of farm & construction equipment I’ve been compiling now for nearly 22 years, you could make a strong argument for John Deere tractors being “as good as gold”.

More proof came last week on a July 21, 2011 farm auction near the central Illinois town of Lincoln. On this auction was a very nice 1998 JD 8200 2WD tractor with 2,632 hours. This tractor was a beauty. The word I got from auctioneer Mike Maske was the original owner was a religious “waxer”. He loved his tractors and took exceptionally good care of them. The second owner of this JD 8200 only put 400 hours or so on it leading up to last week’s auction.

It sold for $71,000, the second highest auction sale price I’ve ever seen on a 2WD JD 8200.

Some perspective: back on a 12/30/97 auction in northeast Missouri, a 1997 JD 8200 2WD tractor with only 202 hours on it, making it basically brand new, sold for $70,250. Now 13 1/2 years later a JD 8200 2WD with 2,632 hours sells for $71,000.

That’s what I call a very good investment. Not as good as gold…as good as green.

“LIVE” COMMENTARY ON 2 AUCTIONS

I had a little fun here this afternoon (July 13th) and did some “live” running commentary on our Machinery Pete Facebook page on a pair of nice farm auctions going on today: one in west-central Minnesota by Zielsdorf Auction & Real Estate, the other farm auction in Hillsboro, North Dakota by Steffes Auctioneers.
As I write this (1:30 PM CST), auctioneer Bob Zielsdorf is now selling a sweet 1982 JD 4040 tractor with only 2892 hours. I peeked in our “auction results” database and saw the highest auction price I’ve ever seen on a JD 4040 was $37,000 on a February 2009 farm sale in south-central Minnesota, but that 4040 had only 1458 hours. Average Auction Price on JD 4040 tractors so far this year coming into today = $15,340. So what did the 4040 sell for today? See below:

JULY 13, 2011 FARM AUCTION: WEST-CENTRAL MINNESOTA

1982 JD 4040 tractor with 2892 hours: $24,000

1983 JD 4450 2WD tractor with 7000 hours: $32,750

1998 JD 9200 4WD tractor with 2737 hours: $98,000

1998 JD 9510 combine with 2378 engine hours: $55,000

2000 JD 893 corn head: $12,500

1999 JD 925 flex head, new poly 400 acres ago: $8,700

Unverferth header trailer, 4 wheel: $2,600

JD 455 drill, 25′, 7.5″ spacings: $17,700

1995 JD 1750 8R-30 planter, dry fertilizier: $21,000

Note that sale price of $98,000 for the 1998 JD 9200 4WD tractor with 2737 hours….that is the 3rd highest auction price I’ve seen in the the U.S. on a JD 9200 and continues a trend I’ve been watching now since last November….used 4WD tractors in very nice condition have been bringing much more $$ on sales. Color doesn’t seem to matter, I’ve seen HIGH prices on NH, CaseIH, AC, MF and JD.

VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS FROM FUN TRACTOR RIDE IN IOWA LAST WEEK

The Three Rivers Tractor Club in Donnellson, IA (southeast Iowa) invited me down to speak at the dinner following their annual Tractor Ride last Thursday (July 7th). What a fun day! I got down to Donnellson early and started shooting video as the nearly 70 great-looking antique tractors rolled out from the Lee County Fairgrounds. The Tractor Ride took a beautiful winding route to Keokuk, IA some 20+ miles away and then a spot of lunch and home again to Donnellson. Here’s a Youtube video I put together, highlights from this fun day with my new friends in the Three Rivers Tractor Club:
