The Nicest John Deere 4020?

$31,000: The Highest Auction Price Machinery Pete has seen on a JD 4020

1,280 John Deere 4020 tractors.

That’s how many I’ve seen sold at auction over the last 14 years. That’s how many 4020 sale prices we’ve got in our “auction results” database at Machinerypete.com. I’m sure the number is well over 2,000 4020′s sold in my 21 years of tracking auction sale prices.

The nicest one I’ve run across? Hmm, don’t have to think about that too hard. Would have to be the 1972 4020 with 2,499 one-owner hours sold on a farm auction November 21, 2007 in northwest Ohio.

Machinery Pete travels the country attending equipment auctions

Now I have a pickup with our “Machinery Pete” logo on it.

Back then, I didn’t. Then? Back just before Christmas. The new pickup was on order. I made a roadtrip to shoot video at machinery auctions in Kansas, Missouri and Illinois. The last leg of my journey found me in Walnut, IL on December 19, 2009 for a very nice farm retirement auction by auctioneers Darrell Dahl and Bob Johnson. Lot of great Deere equipment on this sale, including a sweet 1977 JD 4430 tractor with 6,250 1-owner hours. Also a 2009 JD 1770 NT 12R-30 planter; a 2008 JD 8130 MFWD tractor with 575 hours; a 2001 JD 9550 combine with 1,750 engine hours and a 2003 JD 693 corn head (sold very high!). Here’s the video from this auction:

John Deere Dominates Used Equipment Market

The numbers speak for themselves.

They always have. 21 years now I’ve been compiling auction sale prices on all types of used farm and construction equipment sold on auctions throughout the U.S. and Canada. Normally the numbers I write about are those sale prices. But all the sale price numbers I’ve compiled also tell another tale.

What’s the Hottest Used Tractor on the Market?

1991 JD 4455 tractor with 1,423 hours sells for record auction price

What’s the hottest used tractor going?

Come on, give me a tough question. This one is too easy. Hands down, the hottest used tractor on the market the past five years has been the John Deere 4455. Auction sale prices on 4455′s have been zooming higher since 2004 and show no signs of slowing down.

Back in Time 1972: New John Deere 4230 Tractors

What were you doing back in mid August 1972?

I was only six years old and doubt I was paying much attention to the Nixon vs. McGovern presidential race that summer. More probably I was out in the driveway dribbing a ball pretending I was Walt Frazier or Earl Monroe. That’s just a guess on my part. My memory isn’t quite that good. But I can tell you without a doubt, what was going on in front showrooms of John Deere dealerships around the country.

New Collector’s Item? JD Forage Wagons

john deere forage wagons New Collectors Item? JD Forage Wagons

I got an interesting email last week. From Dustin, a farmer in West Virginia, who collects late model JD 714A and 716A forage wagons:

I COLLECT THE LATE MODEL 714A AND 716A WAGONS. I WORKED AT A JOHN DEERE DEALER FOR 4 YEARS AND KNOW THE LAST ONES WERE BUILT IN LATE 1989 OR EARLY 1990 AND THE POLY FLOORS STARTED AT SN #: 017701. I’M WONDERING  WHAT THE LAST SERIAL # PRODUCED IS. I HAVE (3) OF THE LAST 716A’S WITH SERIAL #’S W00716A018510, W00716A018514, AND W00716A018528. (2) ARE IN MINT CONDITION, STILL HAVE THE DEALER DELIVERY STICKERS ON THEM ALONG WITH THE PLASTIC TAG ON THE BEATERS. DO YOU HAVE ANY INFO ON THE LAST SERIAL #’s?

Video Highlights from Kansas Auction

On June 3rd, 2010 I did a conference call with a stock analyst from Merrill Lynch. Periodically I get calls from folks on Wall Street looking for insights into the used farm and construction equipment markets. I’m always happy to talk used iron, as I’ve been tracking auction prices for 20+ years now.

The conversation turned to used combines, specifically used combines values. How have they been holding up. I talked about the premium I’ve been seeing folks willing to pay for the really good condition used combines sold on farm retirement or estate auctions the last couple years.

Record High Auction Prices in Canada

The used farm equipment market has been red hot up north.

I began to notice this trend last November. Remember how very, very wet it was through most of the U.S.? Harvest work just kept getting pushed back, and back, and back further. Around the end of the first week of November 2009 the first real nice farm auctions of the season appeared, two in particular in eastern North Dakota. The sale days came and I wondered….

Will these be the first farm auctions I’ve seen in 20 years to be postponed….due to GOOD weather?

Nice JD 4440 Tractors Attract Big Interest

It will happen sometime here in the next week or two.

What will happen? The 1,000th auction sale price on a JD 4440 tractor will be entered in our web site (www.Machinerypete.com). As of today we have 995 sale prices on JD 4440′s, going all the way back to the calendar year 1996. 4440′s, made by Deere from 1978-82, have been staples on the farm scene now for 30+ years. Connections, emotional and otherwise, to this venerable tractor model run deep.

I know, I see it firsthand every time a nice 4440 shows up for sale at auction.
