Why are cold flow properties so extremely important for transmission and hydraulic fluids? If oil is too thick at cold temperatures, your machine may not start properly – or at all for that matter.

This puts unnecessary stress other parts like the starter and battery. Even if your machine does start, components in the transmission and hydraulic system will be rotating oil that is thick. Thick oil not only wastes fuel but, even worse, it creates increased load and causes poor hydraulic function.

John Deere Hy-Gard

John Deere Specifications

John Deere JDM J20 specification lists temperatures that the transmission and hydraulic fluids should flow. In order to meet these specifications, fluids must pour at -36 degrees Celsius (-32 degrees Fahrenheit). John Deere Hy-Gard™ Cold Pour does just that.

What is Hy-Gard?

John Deere Hy-Gard oil provides the best performance and protection for hydraulic and transmission systems. Typically, it’s recommended for John Deere machines with either common system reservoirs or separate transmission and hydraulic systems. This includes those with wet brakes and wet clutches.

Low Viscosity Hy-Gard is designed to flow at even lower temperatures than specified by JDM J20, which is why it flows more freely at -36 degrees Celsius. You can see the difference in thickness for yourself.

Key Features of Hy-Gard

There are several key features and functionalities that make John Deere Hy-Gard different from other hydraulic and transmission oils:

  • Incorporates friction modifiers that offer smooth clutch engagement and high braking capacity with minimum chatter.
  • Contains viscosity improver additive that is not found in many other hydraulic/transmission oils. This helps ensure the correct viscosity at all temperatures and is essential to equipment performance, protection, and maintenance.
  • Holds viscosity between the ISO grades of 46 and 68 @ 40°C
  • Exceeds JDM J2OC specification. No competitive oils meet the performance requirements that Hy-Gard does.

Final Thoughts

To avoid starving components and wasting expensive fuel and valuable time, use Hy-Gard and Low Viscosity Hy-Gard. Make sure that your John Deere equipment is well cared for this winter so that it always starts on time and achieves full functionality, quickly.
