John Deere is a longtime producer of powerful engines, meaning companies know that they can turn to the business for reliable equipment that will last a lifetime. This is why Circle Line, New York’s oldest maritime sightseeing service, uses John Deere PowerTech 6.8L engines to drive their ships and keep them running smoothly.

Gus Markou, the president of New York Cruise Lines, has always been interested in ships. Right from the start, he knew that his line, which has been in operation since 1945, needed to be efficient in order to continue standing the test of time. With its products and engines, John Deere was an easy decision for him.

Upgrading Daily Operations

Rich McGovern, Area Manager for the company, said that initially, the company was utilizing ships with engines that were no longer manufactured. In addition, they did not meet tier EPA certification.

Both McGovern and Markou knew that they needed to make improvements if they were to keep Circle Line operating up to modern-day standards. Customers were also expecting a comfortable ride on their ships, meaning engines needed to be relatively quiet and vibration-free to fulfill this need, according to New York Cruise Lines Vice President Bill Jette.

Making the Switch to Deere

For Circle Line, switching to Deere engines was a no-brainer. The company’s 6.8L industrial diesel engines are not only powerful, but easy to maintain. Furthermore, Circle Line has been able to maintain a strong relationship with its Deere dealer, who visits the company to ensure that everything is in working order.

A Closer Look at the 6068HFC94

The 6068HFC94 6.8L industrial diesel engine has multiple rated speeds to reduce noise and boost fuel economy. It also has a higher level of peak torque and an optional power bulge, depending on customer needs.

Cooled exhaust gas recirculation cools and mixes measured amounts of exhaust gas with incoming fresh air to lower peak combustion temperatures. The engine also has a 4-valve cylinder head that provides maximum airflow, resulting in greater low-speed torque and better transient response time by utilizing a cross-flow design.

Finally, customers can opt for JDLink that allows them to monitor, protect, and maintain the engine over time.
