Early Beginnings

The story of John Deere Des Moines Works begins back in 1941 at the outset of World War II. The U.S. government was dramatically increasing its capacity to manufacture ammunition, so the Des Moines ordinance plant was built over the next four years. The vast complex of 279 buildings sprawled across 4,400 acres and played a critical role in the war effort – this location was responsible for producing machine gun rounds for the U.S. and Allied troops.

After the war ended, John Deere purchased almost 600 acres of the land and about 40 acres of the building space for what would eventually become John Deere Des Moines Works.

A Bustling Factory

In 1948, the first John Deere machine – a 226 corn picker – rolled off the assembly line at the facility. At the time, the company employed 570 people. Today, there are more than 1,300 people working at the facility. John Deere Des Moines Works is a world-class manufacturing facility that produces a wide range of farm machinery. Cotton harvesters, grain drills, and self-propelled sprayers are all made at this factory today.

Company Vision

John Deere founded the company in 1837 on the simple vision of helping farmers become more efficient and profitable. More than a century later, John Deere Des Moines Works is embracing that vision and showing it every day.

Furthermore, the company as a whole is constantly looking for new ways to meet the evolving needs of customers. State-of-the-art computers now allow engineers to design more efficient, high-quality machines. Deere only uses the best raw materials on the market as well, meaning customers are always getting the best possible equipment from the company.

At John Deere Des Moines Works, employees take pride in their products, customers and the communities where they live and work.
