Ben Lemmons, who owns Deep Roots Landscape Management, has been fond memories of growing up on a hobby farm in Kansas. As a child, he remembers building forts, growing gardens, and raising goats. Now, he has taken his passion to a new level, developing it into a business in Manhattan, Kansas, and integrating John Deere machinery along the way.
In addition to the hobby farm, Lemmons remembers his father being a primary role model for him growing up. He was taught to pursue his dreams of owning his own business, and at 14, he began selling vegetables twice a week at a local farmer’s market. When he was finally able to save enough money to buy his own truck and acquire a lawnmower, he was ready to set off on the path that he is on today.

The Backbones of the Business
Fast-forward 21 years, and Lemmons is now the owner of Deep Roots Landscape Management. The company employs 16 full-time workers and helps to maintain several hundred lawns every week. However, that isn’t all the business handles – Deep Roots also specializes in landscape design and installation, as well as irrigation design.
“When we started out, we always had hard workers, but not the experts that we have today,” said Lemmon. “I’ve tried to foster an atmosphere where people can grow and expand their skill sets. To make good employees, you have to believe in them.”
Implementing Deere Equipment
Lemmons began using John Deere machinery approximately three years ago after he was disappointed in a competitor’s skid steer.
“It was a lemon, and we weren’t treated well by the dealer either,” he said. “So I called our local John Deere dealer, PrairieLand Partners, and they helped us trade into a new machine.”
The company started using a John Deere 323E Compact Track Loader with a wide array of buckets, forks, and other attachments, and the rest was history. Lemmons has a great appreciation for the machine’s agility and ability to work in tight spaces.
“It’s extremely good at holding a level grade after installing a sprinkler system,” says Lemmons. “It doesn’t bounce around like a wheeled machine — it’s just an incredibly fast grading machine, so we are more efficient.”
At the end of the day, Lemmons wants to make sure his employees have all the machinery they need to get the job done right, and Deere has helped him every step of the way.
