JD9870 RB StLouis2011 6 29 12 Large 1 Year Old & Small 32 Year Old Deere Combines at Auction

This 2011 JD 9870 STS combine with 407 engine hours sold for $232,500 on a June 29, 2012 Ritchie Brothers Auction near St. Louis, MO

I love stark contrasts.

I see them every day as I compile auction sale price data from throughout North America on all types of farm & construction equipment. Some sales are huge, like Ritchie Brothers Auctioneers consignment sale last Friday (June 29, 2012) just outside of St. Louis, MO. This auction featured (26) mostly late-model combines, including this 2011 John Deere 9870 STS with 407 engine hours:

It sold for $232,500, a very strong price I thought considering all the combines on this auction and the fact that eastern Missouri and west Illinois have been so darn dry & hot here lately.

Ok now contrast that auction and that combine to the small farm retirement auction for Harold Van Sickle just outside of Webster City, IA on July 18, 2012. One of the main attractions on this sale is Harold’s 1980 John Deere 4420 combine with 2,390 hours, inspected every year, never sat outside a night in its’ life. Take a look, she’s a real beauty:

I suspect there will be equally strong bidding interest in Harold’s spiffy 32-year old small capacity 4420 combine as there was in the very large 1-year old 9870 STS machine on Ritchie Brothers huge sale near St. Louis last week. I’ve noticed the past 5+ years continued strong buyer demand for really good condition smaller used combines, all the way from these older JD 4420’s, up through Deere’s 6620’s, 6620 II’s, 9400’s, 9410’s, 9450’s to the 9560 STS’s.

I’m guessing there will likewise be very strong interest in Harold’s sharp 90 HP 1980 John Deere 4040 tractor with 4,849 hours:

Values on nice used < 100 HP Tractors have been rising here lately. The (3) highest auction sale prices I’ve seen on JD 4040 tractors (made by Deere 1978-1982) have all come in the last three years:

• $33,000: 1978 model with 1,368 hours on 9/2/11 auction in east-central MO
• $32,250: 1980 model with 2,156 hours on 3/6/10 auction in north-central OK
• $37,000: 1980 model with 1,458 hours on 2/18/09 auction in south-central MN
